Terms of service

1. Who we are

yomijapan (“we”, “us”) is operated by the sole proprietor named on our Legal disclosure page. By creating an account or using yomijapan.com (the “Service”) you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2. What the Service is

The Service publishes short Japanese reading material with furigana, a tap-to-look-up dictionary, a personal vocabulary list, and reading-progress tracking.

The reading material is written by an automated language model, using publicly available Japanese news topics as its starting point. It is study material, not journalism. We do not promise that it is accurate, current, or complete, and you must not rely on it as a source of news. Book titles and rankings shown alongside articles come from third-party catalogue data.

3. Your account

You need an account and a verified email address to read full articles. Give accurate information, keep your password to yourself, and email us at support@yomijapan.com if you think someone else is using your account. One account per person. You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service.

4. Plans and payment

Prices are shown on the Pricing page in US dollars and include consumption tax. Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel. Payments are processed by Stripe, Inc.; your full card number never reaches our servers.

Paid plans are not on sale yet — we plan to open them in September 2026. Until then every account is on the free plan, which includes one full article per day.

5. Cancellation and refunds

You can cancel at any time. Email support@yomijapan.com; once paid plans open you will also be able to cancel yourself from the Stripe customer portal. Cancelling stops the next renewal — you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for. We do not refund periods already paid for, and we do not pro-rate. If we are the reason the Service becomes unavailable to you, we refund the unused part of the period. Nothing here removes rights you have under mandatory law where you live.

6. What you may and may not do

The reading material, the site, and its design are ours. You may read, quote, and study them for your own personal, non-commercial use. You may not:

  • resell, republish, or redistribute the material;
  • use automated tools to bulk-download it;
  • share your account with anyone else;
  • use the material to train a machine-learning model.

7. Availability and changes

We publish new material several times a day, but we do not promise any particular volume, schedule, or uptime, and we may change or withdraw features. If a change materially reduces what a paid plan gives you, we will email you before it takes effect.

8. Suspension

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or that we reasonably believe is being used fraudulently.

9. No warranty, and our liability

The Service is provided “as is”. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before it arose. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change materially affects your rights we will email you at least 14 days before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the updated terms.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of Japan. Disputes go to the Tokyo District Court as the court of first instance, unless mandatory consumer-protection law where you live gives you a different forum.
